May 22, 2023 - The Smithson Valley High girls soccer team finished the year as state semi-finalist with a record of 27-1. The team and coaches were recognized by the Board of Trustees during the May 18 board meeting.
The SVHS girls team advanced to the UIL state tournament for the first time. As the bi-district, area and regional champs, the Rangers lost to Grapevine 2-1 in the Class 5A semifinals. According to the San Antonio Express-News, no team in San Antonio area history had opened a season with 27 straight wins.
Head coach Jason Adkins was named Coach of the Year by Region 4 as well as by the Express-News, and assistant coach Shauna Douglass was named Assistant Coach of the Year by Region 4. The team was also coached by Brooke Moczygemba.
Senior Sabrina Taber, who played forward, was named as a finalist in the Express-News Player of the Year recognition; and junior Wrilyn Shippey, was named District 26-5A Defender of the Year.
Four SVHS players were named to the Class 5A all-area teams including Arianna Monnin, Shippey, Taber and Malia Thalman. Read more in the Express-News here.
