Being involved in your child's high school years can be both exciting and challenging.
Below are a few ways you can better prepare your child for life after high school.

Going On a University Visit With Your Student?

Canyon Lake High School Juniors and Seniors are allowed 2 excused days per year to visit colleges and universities.

*NOTE: Student must present a College Visit Request Form to the CLHS Attendance Clerk in order for it to be excused.Visit the College Visits page to print out the form.

How can parents help?

As a parent or family member to your college bound student you can help them prepare by teaching them basic life skills, such as

  • How to open a bank account
  • How to write a check
  • How to balance a budget
  • How to do their own laundry
  • How to navigate public transportation
  • How to navigate
  • How to cook
  • How to make a financial plan

You can also:

  • Attend college fairs with your student and ask questions
  • Participate in college visits. Weigh the pros and cons of each college
  • Keep copies of all components of the application that they're responsible for
  • Print out hard copies of online applications, if possible
  • Save any postal or electronic proofs of mailing and receipt
  • Inform those writing their recommendations when and where they have applied online
  • Remind anyone who is writing a recommendation to keep a copy of the letter.
  • Establish a line of communication with each college to which they apply.
Get the card (during a college visit) of the college admissions counselor (who will be reading the application).
  • Ask admission representatives questions about their institution's process:
what the timeline for application processing is, how long they should wait before calling to ask about applications and so forth.
  • Prepare to be patient. Processing applications takes time; students may not get any news for several weeks.
